DIY Fall Themed Wood Burning Sign
Happy September friends! I hope everyone is having a beautiful start to their Fall! I thought I’d kick off Fall by making a fun little sign to add to my Office/Craft Room.
I love to decorate for the Holidays and Seasons. I have never really decorated my office before though. Now it is still a work in progress but the room is slowly coming together.
Project Materials
Cricut Design
I grabbed a small Wood Plaque from Michaels that was 18in by 5in. I opened up my Cricut Design Space and found a fun decorate Fall quote. I added it to my canvas and resized it to fit the wood plaque.
Vinyl Stencil
I cut it onto a piece of vinyl with my Cricut Explore Air 2 and transferred it onto the wood with Transfer Tape. Instead of weeding the outter layer of the vinyl I weeded the inside. To make it similar to a stencil.
I traced the Fall saying with a pencil so I could use that as a guide.
Wood Burning with Ammonium Chloride
Next, you will make the mixture to paint onto your wood sign. Mix 1 Tb. of Ammonium Chloride into 1/2 cup of water. Stir it thoroughly.
Lightly paint the ammonium chloride mixture onto your wood plaque. Do your best to paint within the lines as it’s a clear solution. Also, don’t saturate your paintbrush, the solution bleeds easily.
Wagner HT400 Heat Gun
I worked in sections and painted only one letter at a time. Apply the heat gun on setting 2 to your wood plaque. You will notice that the ammonium chloride mixture will start by turning yellow.
Once it turned yellow I put the heat gun a little closer to the wood so that it would burn quicker. I realized I wasn’t putting it close enough and it was taking a very long time for the ammonium chloride to burn.
I personally like the burned wood look around the design so I put the heat gun very close to the wood.
It takes a little getting used to but it’s such a fun technique and can be used in so many ways! I stenciled a design onto a wooden Jack-o-Lantern I picked up at my local dollar store.
Fall Wood Burning Sign
This is such a fun addition to my office. I’m excited to add more homemade Fall decor to Office/Craft Room. After all, that’s what I do in there! I may as well decorate with all things handmade!
