DIY Faux Steel Letters

I have a super simple and quick Valentines craft for you today!  I originally shared this over at Lemon Thistle a couple weeks ago while Colleen is enjoying time with her new babe.  It’s so simple and easy that you can get it done just in time for the Holiday next weekend.  I don’t do a ton of Valentine decor in my house but I want to make more every year to add to my collection.  What’s great about this one is you can keep up year round!

Right now steel letters are all the rage!  Especially the ones that light up…unfortunately I’m not sharing that with you today as I want this to be quick and easy.  You can defintely add lights to these and make a similar sign like Amy from Homey Oh My did.   I’m going to share how you can create those steel letters for a fraction of the price.  Alright…are you ready for this “long” tutorial?

All you need is to start with some paper mache letters of any size.  You really have endless opportunities as to what you want your letters or words to say.   I thought it would be fun for valentines day and for our master bedroom to create an XOXO sign.  We have a large decorative shelf above our bed in our master bedroom and I love changing out the decor.

Paper mache letters can be bought on amazon or found at a local craft store. I was at Michaels today shopping for another project and wanted to check out their paper mache letters and unfortunately they don’t carry them there.  Weird huh?  I’m guessing you can find them at Hobby Lobby or JoAnn’s Fabric.

All that’s left to do once you have your letters is spray paint them silver!  I have found this brand of spray paint to mimic the steel letters best, Design Master in Super Silver.  You can also find this at your craft stores as well, I believe mine was purchased at JoAnn’s.

No priming or prepping is necessary.  Just spray paint your letters in a well ventilated area with a coat or two of silver spray paint and you are done!  Let it dry and set them up on display!  You could even add a small hole to the back and hang them up on the wall with a tack, since they are paper mache they are super light in weight!

 I hope that you can recreate this quick and easy DIY Steel letters before the Holiday.  If not, just make them and keep them in your room all year round!  I love the look of them in my master bedroom!  I apologize I have been a little MIA the past week or two!  Like I have mentioned we are painting our kitchen cabinets.  I’m happy to say they are practically done and I can’t wait to share the end result with you!
