$100 Room Challenge – Week 4
Hey everyone! It’s week 4 of the $100 Room Challenge! Hosted by the lovely Erin from Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry. I don’t have a ton to update you on this week. Of course, my weekend got filled and I wasn’t able to get as much done as I had hoped!
No big deal though because thankfully we have an extra week! Phew! I was struggling with motivation to get it done and I even had a small glitch in the plan.

What is the $100 Room Challenge?
If you are new here or haven’t seen my previous posts about the $100 Room Challenge….let me fill you! You have to makeover one room, in one month, with $100!
Seems pretty simple right?! It’s not too bad but sticking to a budget can be tough. And, man the month sure does fly by!

MDF and Cutting Issues
I went to Home Depot to buy some MDF boards and they were out. Who knew that they were a hot commodity?! There were a few more errands I needed to do before I got home. While in the car I called Lowes to see if they had MDF in stock.
The next day I went to Lowes and talked with a couple guys about using MDF for the board and batten. The first guy said that the MDF would work and I mentioned needing it cut into 4-inch pieces. He said that 2 cuts were free and then it was $1 a cut from there on out.
I’ve had things cut at Lowes multiple times in the past without being charged. So, I said thank you and walked away and called Home Depot. They said the first 5 cuts free and 50 cents after that.
I went to talk to another guy about other possibilities at Lowes. He said the MDF was going to be the cheapest option and that he would give me a deal on the cuts. I needed that because this room challenge is all about spending $100 or less!
Good People
He was just getting off work so I asked him if he would be working the next day. Thankfully he was, so I purchased the 2 pieces of MDF and left them at Lowes until the next day.
I got a few things done around the house and then I headed over to Lowes around 10 am. I walked in and found John. He confirmed that I only needed 4-inch cuts and nothing off the length. I agreed.
He then told me that he already had it done for me and was on a cart by the doors! He was so nice and helpful! And….he didn’t even charge me! It really is a breath of fresh air when you meet a good person. Sometimes I feel like that’s hard to come by these days!
I was originally thinking of getting a thinner wood for the board and batten because my baseboards are thin at the top. I didn’t want to replace all of my baseboards. When I went to Lowes I just didn’t like anything except the MDF.
Baseboards + Molding
So, I had to come up with another solution. I decided to go look at the moldings and see if I could find anything that was thin on one end and 1/2 inch thick on the other. The MDF I wanted to use was 1/2 inch thick. I found it!
So imagine this pine glass bead turned upside down and placed on top of the baseboards! I can’t wait to show you how it turns out next week!
Once I got home I had my husband immediately help me put up two boards. I couldn’t wait to see how it looked! And unfortunately, that is all that has gotten done.

So glad it worked out for you! It’s going to look great when it’s done! Also, I love that rug- are you going to use it in the finished space?

So far our local Home Depot isn’t charging us for the cuts unless it’s on a huge scale. I’m loving board and batten and am looking forward to seeing how the pine glass bead works.
