Lego Table

Over the Holidays I went to Iowa to celebrate Christmas with my family.  I wanted to do something creative for a present for my niece and nephew.  They are both currently obsessed with legos so I thought it would be fun for them to have a lego table.  I brought the idea up to my sister and she thought that they would love it.  She had an old table at her house that I could use.  I was planning on buying a cheap one on Craigslist so I was happy to get one for free from my sister! 🙂

We got into town on Thursday and I needed to get the table done before we opened gifts on Friday night.  I was a little pressed for time so I didn’t do a few small things I would normally do to prep the table. I decided to leave the stickers on the table because they would be hidden underneath the lego plates.  I took the table and chairs outside and spray painted a gray primer onto the table so it would lighten it up for the coats of paint.

It was a little dark outside so I didn’t get the best coverage. 😉  I did one coat of primer and let it dry for an hour and then I did a coat of Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Spray Paint onto the top of the table.  Again, I let it dry for an hour and put on a second coat of chalkboard paint.  I didn’t worry about getting paint onto the legs of the table because I was going to hand paint that section of the table.

I let the chalkboard paint dry for about an hour or two and then I laid out trash bags on the floor in my sister’s living room so that I could paint the table and chairs.  I used Disney’s Magnificent Metallic Paint in Royal Blue on the table.  I love how it looked with the chalkboard paint.  It definitely needed a second coat so I let it dry overnight before I applied the second coat of blue.

The next morning I applied the second coat of blue paint and then I started to glue the lego plates to the table.  I ordered these off of Amazon and I got 10 – 5×5 inch pieces.  I wanted to originally glue these on with Gorilla Glue because it is such a strong adhesive but I forgot to bring it with me.  My sister had some Wood Glue and it worked great!  I laid out the plates so that they were centered on the table and I began gluing.  I applied a healthy amount of wood glue on the back of the lego plate and placed it on the table.  I started with the center plate and glued each one on after so that it continued to be centered.

The back of the glue instructed the user to utilize clamps to ensure that it dried in place.  I did not have clamps so I put a heavy platter on top.  I noticed that the edges were starting to come up so I ended up using three different books to keep it in place.

Once it was all dry I used chalk and wrote Aiden & Zoe a little Christmas message.  They really loved the table and had so much fun building on it with the new legos they got for Christmas.  We also had a lot of “fun” keeping Lucy away from the little pieces of legos! 😉

This was a fairly easy project and only took a couple hours.  I hope that Aiden and Zoe have many hours of fun using this table!  Maybe I’ll make another one of these someday for Lucy. 🙂
