Stemware Storage

Does anyone else have a piece of IKEA furniture that needs an update? I love a good IKEA hack and have done a few myself! I redid my dressers in my bedroom, made book shelves with spice racks and even took an old IKEA cube book shelf and made it into an entertainment center…tutorial soon to come! I decided to team up with Hickory Hardware and do an IKEA Rast makeover. I had a lot of different ideas with what I wanted to do but I settled on the idea of making the dresser into a bar cart/stemware storage for my dining room.

First things first….assemble the Rast according to the directions. Thankfully, this dresser doesn’t take that long compared to other IKEA furniture. I wanted to attach legs to the dresser but there is not a bottom to this dresser. To create a bottom I took two 1×4 pieces of wood that I got from Lowes and I had them cut it to size. It was 23 3/8inches in between the bottom of the dresser from one side to the other. You may want to give yourself a little wiggle room and have them cut it slightly longer because sometimes their cuts aren’t always 100% accurate. This way you can sand it down to the correct length if needed.

The wood is quite thin on the dresser so I started by pre drilling holes into the side where the boards would be attached and then screwing them into place so they were secure.

After the boards were in place I attached the leg plate to the boards and screwed in the legs. The dresser is quite short so I loved the added height these legs gave the dresser.  

Next I made sure to fill in all screw holes and original knob holes with some wood filler. I let them dry over night as the bigger the hole the longer the dry time that is required. One dried you will want to sand them down so that they are even with the dresser. I wanted to make sure I had nice clean lines so I used an electric sander. 

The next step was to paint the dresser. I am new to the whole chalk paint world (I know I’m a little late to this trend) and I went with the White Linen by Chalkworthy.  I’m really loving the look and simplicity of chalk paint.  The great thing about chalk paint is you do not need to prime or sand your piece of furniture! Just clean it off (especially since you sanded the wood filler) and you are good to go! I gave the inside and outside of the dresser one solid coat of White Linen and then gave the drawer fronts and outside of the dresser two more coats. Since this piece of furniture has no finish to it the wood soaked up the color. Follow it up with the soft wax after the paint has dried.

The next step was to apply the O’verlays. I love that the O’verlays really add dimension to your furniture! The best part is they have lots of different IKEA furniture kits! I went with the Pippa Kit 2.  It’s a great way to update your IKEA furniture to look new and expensive. I have been wanting to use one of their kits for quite some time so I was super excited to finally give it a try with this dresser.

If you want your O’verlay to be a different color than your furniture then you will want to spray paint it ahead of time. I had a couple different gold spray paints so I tested to see which one would match my hardware the best. I used this gold spray paint.  I used a thin line of Loctite Glue onto the back of the O’verlay and lined it up correctly. What’s nice about the Loctite Glue is you can move it around a little to make sure it straight before it dries.

The last and final step of my IKEA Rast transformation was to put on the gorgeous Hickory Hardware pulls. I decided to go with the Velocity collection in flat ultra brass.  These pulls aren’t available yet but will be soon. I measured the pulls and the drawers and lined them up. I predrilled some holes and then screwed in the hardware!

For an extra added touch I added some decorative liners inside of the drawer.

It’s been a great addition to our dining room and has really helped with storage for holding our stemware and napkins. As I’m getting older and growing up I have started accumulating more and more decorative tableware! And I love it! 

Someone decided to photo bomb the photo shoot!  That’s okay she makes the dresser look even cuter now! 🙂
