Stenciled Lace Feature Wall
I am super into stenciling right now and I love how dramatic and interesting it makes a piece feel. I’ve done quite a few stenciling projects in the past (Stenciled Table Makeover, Updated Knife Block, Antique Side Table, & Little Tikes Table) and I’m not stopping there! I have another amazing stencil project for you today! I teamed up with Cutting Edge Stencils to create a feature wall in my Guest Room. I have used their stencil before with my Stenciled Table Makeover and I can attest that their stencils are far better quality than any other stencil I have used.
Our entire house has needed new paint so we’ve been working on one room at a time. My current project is our guest room. I’m planning to participate in the One Room Challenge next month and I’ve gotten a tiny bit of a head start with the painted walls. Here is what our guest room looked like before. It was pretty much the room where all things “extra” were placed. Nothing matched or went together.
I started with painting the ceilings and walls with a bright white flat paint. I then used latex Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams Duration Home series. As I said I wanted a dramatic feel and white and black are the perfect colors to create a striking feature wall.
I chose to use the Charlotte Allover Stencil Pattern because I thought it would compliment the dramatic feel I was going for. I started with measuring out the center of the wall and started stenciling from the top. When stenciling, you need to secure your stencil to the wall so it will not come loose or fall down when you roll over it. Here is what it looked like after the first stencil was finished. I highly recommend purchasing the clip-on level because it helps keep things straight. As I was doing this project I realized the top of my walls weren’t perfectly straight so the level was super helpful.
I continued to go down the wall with the stencil and then transferred to either side. You can match up the stencil on the circles to ensure that the level is straight as well as using the clip-on level. For a complete tutorial on how to stencil properly check out this video here. You can see how I matched up the stencil in the picture below.
Here is a picture of mid-stenciling. I had to go over it a few times because the black paint needed multiple coats since it’s a dark color on a bright white.
Once you get near the edges of your feature wall you will want to use painter’s tape to make sure you don’t get paint on the other walls. My favorite brand of painter’s tape is Frog Tape. It really holds well and was great to hold the stencil to the wall.
You need to use a roller but then you will want to use one of their brushes when you are doing corners or edges. Press the stencil into the corners to get clean stencil lines and using the brush will make it easier to hold onto the stencil while dabbing the paint onto the stencil.
All that was left to do was stencil the top with the top edge stencil (which was included) and get into the corners of the ledge. I was really nervous to do the ledge area at first because I didn’t want to break the stencil since I had some left to do so I waited until the end to get in the edge. The stencil stayed in perfect shape – it just took a little bending and trial and error to get it into place.
I’m ECSTATIC with the results and I love how it turned out. I will say black on white and a detailed stencil was a lot of work. I thought it would take just an evening, as I had stenciled projects before, but it ended up taking about 3 – 3-hour sessions. It was totally worth it though! It’s a perfect stenciled lace feature wall in my opinion! Here is the final result!
As you can tell the stencil was amazing and I didn’t have much bleeding from the stencil. I did have a few smudges but I went back after it dried and used a small sponge brush to fix the smudges. It’s exactly what I envisioned and everyone that comes over loves it!
