One Room Challenge Week 3

ORC Week 3 CollageAlright, here we are at One Room Challenge week 3.  Myself and roughly 170+ bloggers are taking the 6 week room transformation challenge.  This is my first time participating and I’m having so much fun!  If you’ve been following along or are new here I am transforming my guest room.  I want it to be a home away from home for my guests.  Selfishly I’m kind of wishing I did all of this to my bedroom!  I’m loving how it’s turning out!  Here are the previous week’s posts if you want to catch up or review:

Week 1 |  Week 2

This week I’m focusing in on the closet and transforming it into a craft closet.  I haven’t done much to it except take the doors off and replace it with curtains but I’ve been doing a lot of research on how I want it to look.  Here are some photos that are inspiring me right now:

Now – these aren’t the color schemes I’m looking to do as I’m going to stick with the black, white and gold theme…but I love the different organizational ideas in each one.  I would love to make mine look that lavish but unfortunately I’m not sure it’s in the budget.  I may have to start small and work my way to a beautiful closet like this.  Which one is your favorite?

A couple small projects I did this week was spray paint a couple of my desk supplies for the office area of the room.  I want most of my accents to be gold so I spray painted a waste basket I got from Dollar Tree and an old paper organizer I’ve had in a closet for quite some time.

Before I leave you from this week’s transformation/decision making/inspirations I have one small dilemma that I need your help with.  I guess it’s not really a dilemma rather than I just need everyone’s advice!  My original plan was to sew on (I still need to learn to sew) on black stripes to my white curtains. I’m now thinking perhaps I should leave the curtains as is, but maybe I could paint black and white stripes like the photo below on the interior walls of the closet instead.  What do you think I should do?

Striped Wall

Here is the current state of my closet (sooooo messy) and the curtains I have hung.

Part of me wants to do the curtains so that it’s always seen…part of me says do the walls since the curtains will be open most of the time.  Then what if it’s a mess?  Would it be better to have the curtains closed with the cool pattern?  Ahhh!  I can’t make up my mind so please help me!  What are your thoughts on this terrible not really terrible dilemma!?

  1. Stripes inside will be a whole lot esier. It is actually difficult to get wide stripes on your curtains after the fact. You have to sew them on perfectly straight as your stitching is visible.

  2. Since you asked… I kinda think doing something with the curtains would be good because as much as we desire to keep crafting spaces neat and clean, during a project, it might not be possible. While I love the idea of stripes, you could also try something more simplistic for the curtain and still do the stripes on the wall. Just an idea. Good luck… Ultimately, it’s your space, so do what you think will look best.

    1. I know that’s so true…I doubt I’ll always keep it clean in there! 🙂 Might be better to have it covered up with the pop of color on the curtains?!

    1. That’s a good idea Sara about just doing the bottom! I like it! Yeah I might have better luck with fabric paint rather than sewing the panels on! 🙂

  3. Love the baskets Ruthie! Though I may be biased since I love anything sprayed gold, lol. Hmm, I think to make a big impact I’d paint the curtains. I think it would look great with the accent wall you painted. However, if you are planning on bringing in any other patterns, then I’d leave it white or do a simple black trim on the top or sides so as not to overload the eye. 🙂 Tweeted your post!

    1. Thanks so much Stephanie! I don’t plan to bring anymore patterns in. Just the lace stencil and the striped curtains or closet walls. Everyone is telling me to do the curtains so I just might have to! 🙂

  4. Love how the wastebasket and file holder turned out! As for the stripes, I know lots of people have success painting drapery panels. I like the idea of making them more interesting looking so you don’t have to worry about keeping your craft area tidy all of the time.

  5. I am so excited to see your space come together and understand your dilemna. I sewed my living room curtains as stripes- cutting them apart and sewing different colored sections together. It was a lot of work and time involved. I like your idea of painting the stripes and perhaps detail the curtains by adding one stripe of black to the bottom the same width of the inside stripe? or add a detailed trim or fringe to edges of the curtains? Good luck! I know whatever you decide – it will be fabulous!

    1. Thanks Joy! I really like the idea of adding one stripe at the bottom with the same width as the inside! I may have to use that! I would love to do the stripes on the curtains but I’m afraid I may not have time for that!

  6. I see your dilemma Ruthie! Though I think he striped curtains would be beautiful, I think I’d go with the walls, but honestly, either one you choose will be pretty. I can’t wait to see!

  7. Ruthie,
I love the idea of striping the curtains. I have seen several posts on spray painting stripes on curtains that have turned out really cute. Good luck!

    1. I never thought of spray painting them that’s a good idea! I started working on the closet this weekend so I’m really excited!

  8. Your idea of one room at a time is great. Hopefully I will learn patience as well as design ideas from you. Looking forward to future posts.
